History of our recycle program:

Al Kaly Shriners Recycle program started when TRI-R Recycling signed a contract with Al Kaly Shriners on June 11, 2002. The program was limited to the Colorado Springs area. Jack Cooper of the Colorado Springs Shrine Club accepted the challenge to start the program in Colorado Springs. The job was simple. Find businesses that would sign a contract to locate a recycle bin on their property. TRI-R would deliver the bin and schedule a pick-up day to retrieve the recyclable paper. NO CARD BOARD AND NO PHONE BOOKS were signs on the bins along with JUNK MAIL OFFICE PAPERS AND MAGAZINES. . It was clear that Al Kaly Shrine was responsible. The red Fez was on each bin with the phone number of the Colorado Springs Shrine Club.

The first location for a bin was the Colorado Springs Shrine Club and the second was the Masonic Center on Panorama Drive. As the number of locations increased the monthly collections weight increased. The payment scheduled is based on $5 for every ton of paper collected up to 200 tons, $7.50 per ton up to 300 tons and $11.50 up to 400 ton and $15 for 400 ton and over.

TRI-R opened a recycle-processing site near exit 116 of I-25 and Al Kaly Shrine began locating bins in Pueblo. With this change Al Kaly began to manage the bin locations in both cities and split the revenue with Pueblo and Colorado Springs depending on their production.

In April 2005 TRI-R Recycle were bought by Recycle America Alliance a Subsidiary of Waste Management. The recycle location at exit 116 was closed and Recycle America Alliance (RAA) on Fourth Street in Colorado Springs manages the office and processing activity.

Wayne McKey accepted the Recycle Program Chair in Pueblo job and things began to pickup (no pun intended). Wayne is fearless and has a lot of energy. The number of contracts that Wayne turned in was more than RAA had bins available to provide. Delivery of the bins in Pueblo was contracted to Waste Management. This helped but put an additional link in the passing of information. Wayne now communicates directly with RAA on all issues in Pueblo.

Production in both cities has greatly improved. Colorado Springs has 52 bin locations and produces about 47 tons a month or about $120 per month. Pueblo on the other hand has only 30 bins and produces 96 tons a month or $240 per month for the Pueblo Shrine Club for a total of $360 a month, over $4,000 per year for Al Kaly Shriners.

Some of Al Kaly’s best locations are:

  • St Paul United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs: 5 Tons/Month
  • Grocery Warehouse on Austin Bluffs, Colorado Springs: 4 Tons/Month
  • Walmart on Platte, Colorado Springs: 6 Tons/Month
  • Black Forest Square, Colorado Springs: 5 Tons/Month
  • Belmont Shopping Center, Pueblo: 6 Tons/Month
  • Holy Family Parish, Pueblo: 4 Tons/Month
  • Pueblo Masonic Temple, Pueblo: 5 Tons/Month
  • Ace Cash Advance, Pueblo: 4 Tons/Month

Al Kaly’s production is approaching the 200 ton mark. This means the revenue for Al Kaly Shriners will increase to over $750 per month or $9,000 per year. This sounds like a lot of money for paper that people throw away.

El Jebel collected over $36,000 for 2005 from 276 sites and over 370 bins. Al Kaly may not be as large as El Jebel but these numbers indicate that we have a lot of undeveloped opportunity in waste paper.

Both Colorado Springs and Pueblo are looking for Shriners to help reach a higher production. With four Shriners finding the time to locate one bin per month in each of our cities by the end of 2006 Al Kaly Shriners would have 120 bins an annual production of over $15,000 for year 2006.

You can help in two ways, one, find a bin near you and recycle your waste paper and two, locate a bin.
